Counselling at Coláiste na Mí, has as its objective the empowerment of students so that they can make decisions, solve problems, address behavioural issues, develop coping strategies and resolve difficulties they may be experiencing (DES, 2005).
Counselling is offered on a one to one basis and is generally short term in nature. School can sometimes be an overwhelming place to be and can result in feelings of anxiety, unrest and worry. Sometimes issues outside of school can affect a student’s wellbeing and/or academic performance in school. Self-referral is encouraged and it is not necessary to be able to pinpoint the exact problem for a person to have feelings of anxiety, worry and unrest. The issue of confidentiality is always discussed with students during the first session. This provides the opportunity to clarify any concerns that may arise. Counselling Service files are not attached to any academic records held within the school. In exceptional circumstances Guidance Counsellors may need to break confidentiality if they believe there is a real intent of serious harm or danger to either their student or another individual. in such cases, a full explanation will be given regarding the necessary procedures that may need to be taken.
