Geography is the study of the Earth’s landscapes, people, places and environments. The study of geography at Junior Cycle level empowers students to explore and understand the world around them. Engagement in the subject promotes a deep understanding of people and place as well as developing students’ skills to interpret the physical landscape, observe climatic events and discuss world events in a knowledgeable manner. Studying geography enhances students’ ability to engage with issues such as sustainable development, economic systems, hazard management and climate change. The topics experienced help develop students’ awareness and understanding of cultural variations fostering a respect of difference.
At Junior Cycle level geography is assessed at a common level and students with sit a terminal exam at the end of 3rd year. In addition to the terminal exam, students will complete two classroom-based assessments (one in 2nd year and one in 3rd year) and an assessment task. CBA 1 is titles “Geography in the News” (a structured inquiry of a recent geographical event(s) and “My Geography” (a structured inquiry into a geographical aspect(s) in a local area).
